Pittsburgh Pirate fans went into Spring Training season believing that the true position competition would be in centerfield, between Nate McLouth and Nyjer Morgan. Turns out the lean, mean baseball machine from Moses Lake came to compete, and much as been written about Doumit working to start behind the plate, earning the job and giving the team its goal of having the Doumit bat at the plate as often as possible, too.

Cited by Adam LaRoche as the funniest guy on the team, nary a smile was found...

One of the highlights of this spring training was the additional coaching directives for all catchers at the big league camp by Manny Sanguillen, the Pirates catcher that was part of the 1979 World Series Team.

I spoke with Manny on March 6 before the home game, and after I got done being flustered in the presence of such baseball greatness, I asked him how Ryan was doing this camp and whether, in Manny's opinion, Ryan was a good guy.

Manny said Ryan reminds him of him when he was young. On a scale of 1-10 in baseball compliments, that's a 13 right there. He also said Ryan is a truly good person.
What else does a fan - in this case a fan running Doumit's fan site - need to hear? Nothing, really.
